How Colour Can Affect Your Mood
Colour… it really is quite an amazing thing and we could spend days upon days talking your ear off about it. It has the power to make you happy, sad, excited, scared, or any emotion you can think of really… that’s why choosing the right colour palette for you and your bedroom is super-duper important. We spend so many hours of our lives in our bedrooms, so making sure it's somewhere you love and want to spend time in is maybe one of those most important decisions you make when it comes to interior design... (no pressure).
We like to think we know quite a lot about colour, but it is subjective, so we can’t sit here and tell you what colour your bedroom should be… but we can help guide you to your perfect palette for the ultimate cosy, "just five more minutes" bedroom hideaway of your dreams.
Dark & Moody
Oh how we just love a dark colour palette... A moodier colour scheme might not be what you initially think of when you’re on the search for a peaceful bedroom, but we think dark colours can actually make the most peaceful sanctuary. Our Cumin linen even turned Harriet into a sludgy colour lover...
Why do dark colours get a bad reputation? Well, dark colours are often associated with fear, loneliness and depression, but in reality, most dark and moody colours are inspired by nature (and what’s more peaceful than that)? A dark colour scheme can be grounding, refreshing, inspiring and most importantly, really calming and super-duper cosy. Don't think of a dark colour palette as an empty dark room, it's so so much more than that...
When deciding on your darker colour scheme, go back to the outdoors and think of mossy greens and earthy browns. Think of natural ingredients too, like cumin, nutmeg, sage and even coffee. Whichever colours bring you peace and tranquillity are the right ones for you. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised...
As with any colour scheme, it's completely up to you how you decide to add colour in your bedroom. Have a dark feature wall, opt for wall to wall rich colours with a moody bed linen, choose a light bed linen with lots of earthy accessories... the choice is yours.
Light & Breezy
Light, pastel colours are probably what most people would think of when you talk about a calm and peaceful bedroom. Our minds go to the more traditional pinks, blues, greens, and whites. These lighter, subtle pastel palettes can make you feel super refreshed, awake, peaceful and clean and make you feel like you're sitting in a meadow of wildflowers on a beautiful Spring day.
Light colours are often associated with florals and the lighter side of nature. Think of pretty roses, blue skies, cherry blossoms and cornflowers. We adore this bedroom décor because there are just a billion and one ways to style it.
You can create your light and breezy bedroom however you like, but you can't go wrong with a beautiful bright white, natural or pink bed linen with a host of light coloured cushions and throws, finished with some lovely 100% linen curtains. Linen curtains are absolutely perfect for this type of bedroom, as they let just the right amount of light into the room, without letting too much in or blocking out the light making it too dark and gloomy.
Since we're on the topic of fabrics... we'd also highly recommend 100% linen for your bed for this colour scheme. There's just something about the natural, effortless creases in linen that are the cherry on top of a pastel bed.
Bright & Cheerful
Bright colours might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we think they're fabulous and there are lots and lots of ways to mix them into your bedroom décor. Why do we love the so much we hear you ask? Well, what's not to love? They have the power to really cheer you up and put a big smile on your face; how could you not feel happy and sunny waking up in a bright yellow bed? They can also make you feel inspired, awake and motivated (and we could all do with a little bit more of that sometimes).
When you start to plan your super colourful bedroom, you have a couple of options when it comes to incorporating bright colours (even for those of you who might hate or be a little bit intimated by colour)… you can either go all in, floor to ceiling with big, bold colours, but we know that's not for everyone... If that's a bit too much for you, then you can have a more natural coloured bed and add subtle pops of brighter colours around the bedroom with the odd cushion and throw. The choice is yours and either way is perfect, as long as it feels right to you.
When choosing your bright and colourful bedroom palette, think of sunshine, juicy red apples, a bright blue ocean and the greenest of trees. Whichever bold colours makes you feel calm, embrace them.
