A table laid for food, family and friends is a delight and a pleasure. We all need to eat every day as well as sleep, and adorning your table with textiles can make every mealtime a treat. Here are our tips to keep your table linen as good as new.
The job of our napkins and tablecloths is to make an occasion of eating, but also to protect the table and your cloths from spills and stains. Our linen is very durable, but following these tips and taking care of them will make them an heirloom for years to come.
We have made our table collection to be well used and loved, so don’t be afraid of baked beans and curry spills. Use them well, and make the stains tell tales of good times and food shared (we think a set for best and a set for every day is always a good idea.)
Avoiding Stains
Our tablecloths, table runners, napkins, and placemats are machine washable and can be cleaned using regular laundry detergent. The key to keeping table linens looking their best is pre-treating stains and washing them as soon as you can.
The longer the stain sits on your fabric, the harder it will be to remove so the sooner the better in our view.
Remove any excess liquid or stains on the fabric first, then blot the stain with a sponge or damp white cloth. Then, gently dab up and down to lift the stain, work from the outside of the stain’s perimeter to the inside.
For oil-based stains, sprinkle baking soda on the stain and allow it to sit for an hour or so to absorb any excess oil. Scrape off the baking soda, then gently scrub with washing up liquid and then rinse clean with cold water. This can then go into the machine as normal.
Stubborn stains might require a long soak overnight with a stain remover, be careful if your textiles are colourful as a stain remover might take some of the colour if you leave it too long. Check the packet or bottle for any advice on strong colours.
Stubborn Stains
Coffee
Clean immediately with cold water, then scrub with washing up liquid, rinse the stain in cold water then wash as normal.
Condiments
Scrape off any excess, add washing up liquid and lather before rinsing the stain in cold water then wash as normal.
Blood
Soak straight away in cold water, add washing up liquid and lather before rinsing the stain in cold water. Then wash as normal.
Red Wine
Blot the stain with water then flush the stain under cold running water. Then add washing up liquid and lather before rinsing the stain in cold water then wash as normal.
Washing and Ironing
Our table collection will all wash perfectly well on a 40-degree gentle cycle. We always say wash at 30 if you can to save energy.
Please wash our table textiles with other lightweight fabrics but remember to separate lights from darker colours. Always wash with similar colours.
Do not overfill your washing machine, as this can cause twisting or pulling these smaller items out of shape.
Line dry if you can, away from direct sunlight. You can also tumble dry all of our table textiles on a low heat. If you choose to line dry and want it to have a super soft finish, then we recommend a quick tumble to soften the fabric. If you like a crisp and smart look and feel, dry it flat or on the line and you will get the perfect finish.
Ironing is completely optional, but we say that with a table, a little effort will go a long way. A table laid with pressed textiles for a special occasion is a must, but for Tuesday beans on toast, it's your choice. Iron on the reverse to avoid shiny patches or colour changes with our 100% Linen range.
