Choosing the perfect duvet can make all the difference to your night's sleep, but with so many different types of fillings available, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed when deciding on the right choice for you.

Whether you prefer the natural temperature-regulating properties of wool, the luxurious loftiness of feathers, or the practical, lightweight comfort of microfibre bedding, we’ve got you covered.

In this page, we’ll walk you through each type of duvet filling available at Secret Linen Store, helping you find the perfect match for your unique sleep style.

Natural Duvet Fillings

Our natural duvet fillings are favoured for their sumptuous feel and temperature-regulating properties. If you’re looking for the cream of the crop of duvets, look no further than this premium selection.

Wool-Filled Duvets

Our wool-filled duvets are a brilliant choice for those looking for a natural filling that provides year-round comfort. Offering wonderful temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking properties, the breathable fibres of wool help keep you warm in winter and cool in summer, ensuring a snug night’s sleep.

Our Baa Baa Bedtime Wool Duvet is a wonderful choice for all-season comfort. Instead of a duvet that is ‘too hot’ or ‘too cold’, you’ll have one that is ‘just right’, quietly adapting to your temperature throughout the night, for less waking up and more peaceful night sleep.

Because your bedtime should be perfect, our wool bedding is made to order in Devon, UK, from carefully sourced and certified 100% British wool. Every duvet is made just for you and delivered straight to your door within two weeks. We are proud to say that the wool is fully traceable and certified through a licensed supplier, ensuring it meets the standards required to carry the recognised Shepherd’s Crook mark of British Wool.

Does a wool duvet have a specific smell?

At first, wool bedding can have a slight natural odour, often described as 'woolly' or 'earthy'. This scent is completely normal and is simply a sign of its wonderful natural quality. It usually disappears quite soon. Proper airing on a dry day and regular use will help reduce any initial woolly smells.

How do I wash my wool bedding?

The good news is that dirt won’t get into the fibres of wool; it sits on top, making it super easy to clean and remove dust, so washing your wool duvet or pillow is a rare occasion indeed. You can spot-clean to remove small marks with a damp cloth.

Feather Vs. Down Bedding: What Are the Differences?

The main difference between down and feather duvets lies in the type of filling. Down is made from the soft, fluffy clusters found beneath birds' feathers, offering superior warmth and a lighter, more luxurious feel. Feathers, on the other hand, are larger, have quills, and provide more structure and firmness.

Down-filled duvets

Our goose and duck down duvets are made from the super soft, fluffy layer of fine feathers beneath the tougher exterior feathers of the birds. Unlike regular feathers, down lacks stiff quills, which results in an incredibly soft and light feel.

Down duvets offer brilliant insulation thanks to their unique texture, which creates tiny air pockets that offer wonderful breathability in the summer, keeping you cool, and traps warmth to keep you toasty throughout the winter.

What’s the difference between duck and goose down?

Both duck and goose offer that cloud-like softness, but there are a few subtle differences that can help you choose your perfect filling. Duck is a brilliant choice for those who enjoy a super snug night’s sleep. It’s soft, insulating, and keeps you warm. Goose is a little more decadent because geese are larger birds; their feather clusters are bigger, creating a greater loft and insulation for that extra plush feel.

Deciding on a filling comes down to personal preference. If you’re still unsure about which of our brilliant feather and down duvets to choose, why not head over to our duck down vs goose down guide to learn more about the luxury of these fluffy fillings?

Where do your feather and down fillings come from?

You can rest easy knowing where your fillings are sourced. We offer Hungarian and European feathers and down, which are sourced through the Duntrack® Traceability Standard. This is a framework designed to ensure transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain. The standard audits and certifies at all stages from source to product, making sure responsible processes are adhered to  throughout the supply chain.

What is a duvet’s fill power?

You’ll hear us talking a lot about ‘fill power’ at Secret Linen Store. As well as having a tog rating, our feather and down duvets are also rated by their fill power. This measures the fluffiness, quality, and insulating efficiency of the fillings.

We measure fill power because natural fillings have better thermal properties than synthetic fillings, meaning you don’t need as much filling to achieve the same tog rating (remember, tog means warmth, not weight).  The higher the fill power, the larger each individual piece of down will be, resulting in a loftier, fluffier duvet that provides better insulation.

Synthetic Duvet Fillings

For those who are looking for high-quality duvet filling at a lower cost, synthetic duvets offer a fantastic alternative to natural fillings. Designed to mimic the softness and warmth of down while being lightweight, durable and ideal for those with sensitivities to natural fibres.

Microfibre duvets

Our microfibre duvets are made from ultra-fine synthetic fibres that mimic the plushness and loftiness of our down duvets, all without a feather in sight. They’re lightweight, great for those with sensitivities to natural fibres, and provide excellent insulation, making them ideal for a snug, restful night’s sleep. Plus, they’re easy to care for, offering a practical, budget-friendly option.

If you are a lover of down duvets, but prefer to avoid the real thing (and its higher price tag), then our Synthetic Just Like Down Duvet just might be the duvet for you.

Hollowfibre duvets

Our hollowfibre duvets are filled with siliconised polyester ball fibres that gather in tiny clusters. The polyester strands feature tiny air-filled holes down the centre that trap warmth, while the duvet's hollow core allows air to circulate, keeping you cool in the summer thanks to its brilliant breathability.

Slightly bulkier than microfibre, our hollowfibre duvets offer great insulation, making them perfect for colder nights. Although both options are great, if you ask us, thanks to their durability and ability to maintain shape and comfort over time.

If you’re on the hunt for a big, bouncy duvet, we recommend our Synthetic Softie Duvet (aptly named, of course). Complete with matching hollow-fibre pillows, this duvet is light, lofty,  and oh-so-soft.

How Often Should I Replace My Duvet?

A duvet should keep you sleeping soundly for at least 5 years, but a good quality duvet with high-quality filling could last at least twice as long, especially if it’s rotated with another for the change of season.  Our guide on when to replace bedding explains the telltale signs of a duvet that is at the end of its life and how to help it last longer.
