Feather Bedding FAQs

How do you care for feather bedding?

Caring for your duck or goose down bedding begins when it arrives. We recommend giving your duvet, pillow, and mattress topper a good airing for at least 24 hours before you use it. As the filling is natural, there might be a slight odour on arrival.

When it comes to cleaning your bedding, it’s always best to take it to a professional, although you can carefully wash feather bedding at home if you need to. For tips on keeping your bedding looking and feeling its best, read our handy bedding care guide.

What’s the difference between feather and down bedding?

Deciding on a filling comes down to personal preference. If you’re still unsure about which of our brilliant feather and down duvets to choose, head over to our duck down vs goose down guide to learn more about the perks of these fluffy fillings.

How often should I replace my bedding?

We’re tucked up in bed for almost 3,000 hours a year, so it’s safe to say that our pillows, duvets, and bed linen are getting a lot of love.

At Secret Linen Store, we believe that life is too short to sleep in a bed that you don't feel fabulously comfortable in. A high-quality duvet can last 5 to 10 years, while a pillow usually needs refreshing every couple of years (but if yours is looking or feeling a little past its best, it’s probably time to treat yourself to something new.)

Not sure if your bedding needs a complete refresh? Our guide on when to replace your bedding explains all the need-to-know information.

What’s ‘fill power’?

You’ll hear us talking about fill power a lot, and for a good reason. It’s simply a way of measuring how fluffy and lofty the down is. Think of it as the space one ounce of down takes up when it’s reached its full loft. The higher the fill power, the larger the down clusters, and the more luxurious the feel.

Anything over 600 is considered premium, and at Secret Linen Store, our duvets sit beautifully between 650 and 800, giving you that light, airy warmth. There’s no wonder it’s a bedtime favourite.
