How to Create a Calming Bedroom
If you’ve been finding it hard to switch off lately, you aren’t alone. Our world is full of pings, dings, and bright lights, and sometimes our bedrooms can end up feeling just as loud as the rest of our lives.
At Secret Linen, we are loving the Slow Bedroom movement. It’s all about creating a low-dopamine space that tells your brain it’s finally time to stop racing and start resting
What is a "Low-Dopamine" Bedroom?
You might have seen Dopamine Decor trending recently, where people are embracing neon signs, clashing patterns, and bright, bold energy. While that’s great for a living room, your bedroom is where your brain needs to do the opposite.
A Low-Dopamine Bedroom is designed to reduce overstimulation. It’s about removing the visual clutter that keeps your mind alert. By using soft, natural textures and a calmer palette, you’re creating a space that feels like a deep, quiet breath.

Why We Love the Slow Bedroom Movement
At Secret Linen, we’ve always believed that the best things take time. That’s why we’re such big fans of the slow movement. It’s about choosing quality over quantity and natural over synthetic.
This is exactly why we love linen bedding.
Linen is the ultimate slow fabric, as it’s sustainably made, it lasts for years, and it actually gets better (and softer) the more you use it. It’s the perfect foundation for a bedroom that’s built for rest, not just for show.
Simple Ways to Calm Your Space
Ready to turn your bedroom into a low-stimulation space? Here are a few simple ways to get started:
1. Texture Over Tones
Instead of bright patterns that catch the eye, focus on textures that feel amazing to the touch. Mixing a 100% linen duvet cover with a chunky knit throw or linen pillowcases adds visual interest without being too loud, creating a calming bedroom feel.
2. Choose "Quiet" Colours
If you’re wondering where to start, you can’t go wrong with white linen sheets or soft, earthy neutrals. These colours don't demand your attention, but they just sit back and let you relax.
Psst... if you’re stuck, check out our bed linen buying guide for more colour inspo.

3. Declutter Your Space
Try to keep your bedside table clear of anything that isn't essential. A simple lamp, a glass of water, and maybe that book you’ve been meaning to read for six months.
Clear surfaces = clear mind.
4. Natural is Always Better
There is something so grounding about natural fibres and the way they can help improve your sleep; that's why so many choose linen bedding. It regulates your temperature (no more midnight kicks of the duvet) and feels so much more down-to-earth than synthetic fabrics.

5. The No-Phone Zone
We know it’s hard, but try to keep the screens out of the bedroom. Scrolling through TikTok is a dopamine factory and can lead to doom scrolling till the early hours of the morning. Swap the phone for a dimmable warm light and feel your eyelids getting heavy in record time.
Start Your Slow Sleep Journey
Creating a low-dopamine bedroom is one of the kindest things you can do for your sleep, and it's about making choices that help you feel calm and grounded.
Our Top Tip for a Slower Night
"If you’re transitioning to a low-dopamine bedroom, start with your lighting. Swap cool-toned 'daylight' bulbs for warm, amber-toned ones. When that soft light hits the natural creases of your linen duvet cover, it creates a depth and shadow that feels incredibly comforting and safe."
We’re so passionate about helping you get the best night's sleep possible. If you have any questions about starting your linen journey or just need a bit of advice on styling your slow bedroom, we’re always here to help. Head to our blog for more top tips.
A Little More on Linen Bedding and Slow Sleep
Is linen bedding better for sleep than cotton?
While we love cotton bedding for its crisp, smooth feel, linen is the superstar of the Slow Bedroom because of its incredible breathability. Linen is naturally moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, keeping you cool in the summer and snug in the winter. If you’re a hot sleeper or just love a relaxed, lived-in look, linen might be your perfect match.

Is linen bedding hard to look after?
Not at all, in fact, one of the reasons we love linen for a low-dopamine bedroom is that it’s meant to look a bit rumpled and relaxed (no ironing required). Linen is incredibly durable and actually gets softer and more comfortable with every single wash. To keep your sheets looking their best and lasting for years, we recommend washing them at 40°C and letting them air-dry if possible.
