Why Choose 100% Linen Bedding
Trying to decide on the best bedding fabric for your forty winks? Linen could be your perfect match. Wrapping us up at night for thousands of years, find out why linen bedding has remained on top (of our mattresses) for so long. From its wholesome vintage look to its temperature-regulating qualities, it's time to explore the magic of this marvellous material.
What is 100% Linen Bedding?
Linen is a fabulous fabric made from the fibres of the flax plant. 100% linen bedding, as the name suggests, is made entirely of linen, as opposed to linen blends such as linen and cotton bedding.
Our Linen
Linen has been at the heart of what we do since the very beginning, and we are proud that all our linen is now Masters of FLAX FIBRE™ certified (formerly known as European Flax™).
This independent certification begins at the very start of the journey, in the flax fields of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. These regions are recognised as the world’s leading producers of flax fibre. (Three-quarters of the world’s production of long fibres come from France, Belgium and the Netherlands.) From fibre to finished fabric, the certification guarantees traceability and assures you that your bed linen comes from a respected European supply chain.
What the certification means
Grown in Europe: The flax for our linen is cultivated in Western Europe, where the soil, climate and generations of farming knowledge create the best conditions for flax growing.
Traceability: Every stage of production is audited and traced, so the fibre in your bed linen can be traced back to the fields where it was grown. Guaranteed traceability from fibre to finished product
Integrated crop management practices: Flax is generally grown without irrigation in these regions. Inputs such as fertilisers and plant protection products are used only when necessary and always with care, ensuring crop health while limiting impact. Seeds are certified GMO free.
Support for biodiversity: Flax is grown in rotation, typically every six to seven years on the same plot. This rotation supports soil health, reduces the need for chemicals, and helps encourage a diversity of plant and animal life on farms.
Zero waste: All parts of the flax plant are valued and nothing is wasted. All fibres, long and short, and all products (seeds and shives) are reused, for example as animal bedding.
Mechanical processing: 100% mechanical scutching, fibre extraction without water or solvents. Fibres are separated mechanically, without the need for water or solvents
Expert craftsmanship: Generations of farmers and scutchers bring their knowledge and skill to every step. This human expertise is a key part of the fabric’s quality.
Why we choose it
For you, this means bed linen that is naturally breathable, beautifully textured, and built to last for years of sleeping and washing. For us, it means working with a fibre that combines traditional craft with a certification that values traceability, integrated crop management practices and continuous improvement.
Our linen tells the story of European fields, family expertise and careful production, all woven into the fabric that you take home.
Benefits of Linen Bedding
We could wax lyrical about linen all day, but we’ll try to keep this linen love letter concise.
Softer with Time
Things that get better with age: cheese, wine, whiskey … and linen. When you buy your linen sheets, they’ll be lovely and comfy from the get go, of course, but they’ll only get better from there, softening each time you wash them.
Thermoregulation
Not too hot. Not too cold. Linen bedding is just right. That’s because the hollow fibres allow air to circulate to cool you in summer, while trapping pockets of air to keep you toasty in winter. Our blog on the science of linen can explain how this magic works.
Absorbent
Another thing that makes linen a wonder for summer slumber is its moisture-wicking abilities, absorbing and releasing moisture as you sleep. In fact, it can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture before it even starts to feel a little sticky.
If sleeping in the heat is a struggle for you, head to our summer sleeping guide for recommended remedies.
Gentle on Sensitive Sleepers
No one sleeps well with sniffles and sneezes. Linen’s natural breathability and moisture-wicking properties help create a drier, fresher sleep environment where common allergens like mould and bacteria are less likely to thrive.
If allergies often interrupt your rest, explore our allergy sleep guide for more tips on enjoying a calmer, sneeze-free snooze.
The Rustic Look
We love the look of linen. Quaint and wholesome with its lightly wrinkled look and gorgeous draping, it’s perfect for heritage-inspired interior decor, but looks gorgeous in modern homes too.
At Secret Linen Store, we have linen sheets in stunning colours and charming patterns, including nautical style stripes and traditional gingham.
No Ironing Needed
One of our favourite things about linen? It’s meant to look a little lived-in, meaning one less thing to iron (unless you desperately want to). The look of gently wrinkled sheets gives a perfectly relaxed and laid-back feel, ideal for your sleep space. Less time ironing, more time napping … that’s how we like to live.
If bedding care and housework are sources of stress in your life, perhaps our laundry tips can help.
Benefits of a Linen Duvet Cover: Naturally Weighted
We’ve all heard how great weighted blankets can be. But did you know that the density of linen bed sheets gives them a slight weighted effect? Just crawl under a linen duvet cover to enjoy the sensation of a gentle hug.
