10 Tips to Upgrade Your Bedroom
Your bedroom is your sanctuary. It’s the room where you can truly relax and recharge your batteries, but after a while, your sleepy surroundings can become a little stale - more blah than blissful. If you want to upgrade your bedroom with a few much-needed design enhancements, you’re in the right place. From bedding to curtains and everything in between, here are our experts’ 10 top tips. 1. Choose Mood-Boosting Colours
Colours have a magical ability to alter your mood . Add accents of calming blues, joyful pastels, or grounding greens to build a restful atmosphere. Using a single colour rather than opting for a feature wall can dial up the cosiness. If your room has lower ceilings or you want to have an element of brightness, opt for a white ceiling.
2. Revamp Your Bedding
New bedding is the simplest way to transform your bedroom. Treating yourself to luxurious, high-quality bed linen that feels as good as it looks can improve the quality of your sleep. And choosing a colour or pattern you love will have a big effect on your mood. Buttery-soft cotton, crisp linen, cosy brushed flannel - there’s plenty to choose from.
3. Curate a Collection of Pillows
Adding more pillows to your bed is an easy way to make your bedroom a more comfortable and appealing place to relax. Using different sizes, shapes and pillowcase designs can make the space more visually interesting and give you a chance to express your unique style.
4. Dial Down Your Lighting
Bedrooms and big lights just don’t mix. Whether or not you’re one of the 40% of people who have an aversion to harsh lighting , it’s a no-no if you want cosiness and comfort. Welcome a more relaxing atmosphere with artfully placed lamps. A floor lamp is perfect near larger expanses of flooring, complimenting lamps on your bedside tables. And if you really need to use the main light, go for a warmer-coloured bulb (3000K or less).
5. Layer Textures
Textures can make a room feel rich and inviting. Layer your bed with a mix of materials like knitted throws, soft blankets, fringed cushions or a quilted bedspread placed atop linen covers. These touches create depth and warmth, making your room irresistibly inviting.
6. Declutter and Reorganise
Even the most fastidious of us can let clutter get the best of us sometimes. Nowhere is this more true than in the bedroom, where we spend most of our time in a dozy state and can easily forget to put things away.
Dedicate some time to sorting through your bits and bobs and do a charity shop clothing clear-out to free up some storage space. It's a good idea to make sure your storage is easily accessible so you're more likely to use it, and we'd recommend stowing away the opposite season’s bedding in storage bags that’ll keep them fresh. The result? A tidy room that instantly feels fresher and more spacious.
7. Add Smart Storage
Storage doesn’t need to be wardrobes and boxes. Place a storage bench at the foot of your bed as a place to pop the odd book and give yourself a spot to sit as you get ready. Place a row of hooks along a wall to hang dressing gowns and other garments used regularly, or stack painted wooden boxes atop each other to create rustic modular shelving.
8. Spruce Up Your Curtains or Blinds
Curtains and blinds often get overlooked, but they’re crucial for setting the tone in your boudoir.
Swap outdated styles for lightweight linen curtains in summer, or opt for blackout blinds if you’re a light sleeper. Match your window dressings to your bedding or walls to tie the room together. And if you don’t fancy a huge overhaul, dusting your blinds and vacuuming or washing your curtains can make a world of difference - as well as reducing allergies.
9. Add Plants or Flowers
Bring the outdoors in with a touch of greenery. Plants like snake plants or peace lilies are low-maintenance and can improve air quality. And if you’re a greenery grim reaper, opt for dried flowers or faux greenery for the same uplifting effect. Read our guide to choose the right houseplants for your room .
10. Invest in a Full-Length Mirror
A large mirror is a must for creating the illusion of space in your bedroom. Mirrors bounce light around for a brighter atmosphere and, when combined with handy interior storage, eke out even more precious space.
Transforming your bedroom doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul. Small, thoughtful changes can make all the difference. From swapping out your bedding to adding mood-enhancing colours and soft lighting, these upgrades will help you create a space you look forward to relaxing in.
