You don't strictly need one, but we think they are a lovely addition. Most people use a fitted sheet on the mattress for ease, but adding a flat sheet underneath your duvet creates a protective layer, which means you don't have to wash your duvet cover as often. It also looks very smart when folded back at the top of the bed.
