Difference Between a Bedspread, a Throw and a Blanket
Layering bedding is the secret to a bed that looks inviting and feels warm, but we know the terminology can sometimes get a little bit tangled. You start looking for an extra layer, and suddenly you are faced with bedspreads, coverlets, throws, blankets, and quilts.
While they all serve a similar purpose, keeping you warm, there are distinct differences in their size, design, and styling options. Whether you are looking for a throw or a bedspread, knowing the difference will help you find the perfect finishing touch for your bedroom.
What is a Bedspread or Quilt?
A bedspread is a large, lightweight cover designed to cover the entire bed, typically extending over the pillows and reaching down to the floor on all sides. Traditionally, these were used to cover the bed during the day to keep dust off the sheets.
However, our collection of quilts and bedspreads is designed to be the main event of your layering. Because of their generous size, they add significant warmth and create a very neat, "made" look for your bedroom. If you want a layer that covers your whole duvet and adds a sense of grandeur, this is the one for you.
What is a Throw?
If the bedspread is the main event, the throw is the versatile accessory. When people ask what a throw is, we describe it as a smaller, decorative blanket that focuses on texture and flexibility. Unlike a bedspread, a throw isn't meant to cover the entire bed. Instead, it is designed to be folded at the foot of the bed, draped over the arm of a sofa, or wrapped around your shoulders on a chilly evening.
Because they are smaller, throws are a brilliant way to experiment with colour or material without committing to a whole new look. Our throws come in all sorts of lovely textures, from waffles to knits. To understand more about the different weaves we use, you can have a read of our guide to our different quality throws.
What is a Blanket?
While the word is often used to describe anything warm, a true blanket is generally a functional layer that provides warmth and comfort. Historically, blankets were made of wool and placed between the flat sheet and the bedspread for warmth.
Today, a blanket refers to a layer that is larger than a throw but not as decorative or structured as a quilt. Our blankets are designed to be practical warriors of warmth. They are perfect for tucking in around the mattress for a smooth, secure layer of comfort, or for having on hand in the living room for when the temperature drops.
Which One Should You Choose?
Deciding between a blanket, a throw, or a bedspread really comes down to two things: size and styling.
Choose a bedspread or quilt if you want maximum coverage, a tidy and uniform look for your bed, and a significant boost in warmth. It stays on the bed and acts as a second duvet.
Choose a throw if you want a splash of colour or texture at the end of the bed, something you can easily move from room to room, or a lighter layer to grab for a nap. It is the styling star.
Choose a blanket if you need a practical, warm layer that can be tucked in or used flexibly around the home.
