At Secret Linen Store, we’ve always believed that life looks better from under a pile of 100% linen bedding. But lately, it seems the UK has been waking up on the wrong side of the bed. We’re tired, we’re a bit grumpy, and quite frankly, we’re desperate for a decent kip.

We wanted to know exactly what was going on in Britain's bedrooms, so we asked 2,313 of you to spill the tea on your sleep habits. We’ve found out who’s responding to the kids at 3 AM, why the "sleep divorce" is actually a relationship saver, and why a massive 93.5% of us are ditching cheap synthetics for natural alternatives such as 100% linen and 100% cotton bedding.

The Top-Line: Are We Actually Sleeping?

The short answer? Not really. The average Brit is clocking in just 6.8 hours of shut-eye a night. When you consider that health experts recommend 7 to 9, we’re starting every day with a bit of a deficit.

  • The Quality Score: We asked you to rate your sleep on a scale of 5, and the UK averaged a middling 3.18.
  • The Morning After: 45.5% of you say you feel like you're less productive at work the next day, and 43.8% are battling brain fog before the first coffee has even been poured.
  • The Price of Peace: We’re so tired that on average, Brits would happily pay £34.75 a month, that's over £417 a year, just to guarantee a night of perfect, uninterrupted sleep.

The UK Sleep League: From Belfast to Brighton

Where you live says a lot about your Zzzs. We’ve mapped the country to see who’s winning at the sleep game.

The Gold Medalists are Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is officially the best-rested in the UK, with a sleep quality score of 3.37/5. Their secret? They seem to be the best at putting the phone away, with only 15% scrolling before bed.

The London Hustlers

Londoners manage a surprisingly decent 3.30, but they’re fuelled by digital nightcaps. Over a quarter (25.8%) are scrolling until the very second they close their eyes. It turns out, if you live in a city that never sleeps, you spend a lot of money making sure you do, with approximately 28% of Londoners willing to pay over £51 a month for guaranteed quality rest, compared to just 23% nationally.

The Exhausted Wales & Yorkshire

Spare a thought for our friends in Wales and Yorkshire. Wales has the highest percentage of "Very Poor" sleepers (27.5%), and Yorkshire has the least amount of sleep overall, just 6.78 hours.

The UK's "Linen Belt"

The South East and South West are our heartlands for quality. In the South East, a whopping 95.1% of you say that fabric quality is the most important thing you look for. You know that if the sheets aren't right, nothing else is.

The Parenting Night Watch: Who’s Doing the 3 AM Shuffle?

We love our kids, but we don't always love their timing. We looked at the data for parents, and the gender split is, well... eye-opening.

  • The Mums: 47.1% of women say they are the primary responder when a child cries at night.
  • The Dads: Only 26.5% of men are hitting the floor first.
  • The Shared Effort: Only 12.5% of couples managed to split the night shift equally.

This "Night Watch" gap has a real impact, as women are 60% more likely to report "Poor" or "Very Poor" sleep.

The "Sleep Divorce": It’s Not You, It’s the Snoring

We need to stop being embarrassed about sleeping apart. The "Sleep Divorce" is actually a major trend for 2026.

  • 43% of women in relationships have opted for a separate bed to get some peace.
  • 7% are fleeing "Duvet Bandits" who steal the covers in their sleep.
  • 7.2% are sleeping apart because of temperature wars; one of you is a furnace, the other is an ice cube.

Before you move into the spare room, try switching to linen bedding. It's naturally temperature-regulating; it keeps the hot person cool and the cold person warm. It’s basically a mediator for your mattress.

The UK is Saying Goodbye to Synthetics

If there’s one thing this survey proved, it’s that the UK has finally lost its appetite for "fast homeware". We are becoming a nation of materialists.

  • 93.5% of you say that Fabric Quality is your #1 priority. You’re looking for 100% linen and cotton, not polyester blends that feel like sleeping in a plastic bag.
  • We are 3.3 times more likely to wake up because we are too hot rather than too cold.
  • Among those of you who struggle with the heat, 95.3% refuse to compromise on materials. You know that natural fibres are the only way to survive a humid British summer night without waking up in a sweat.

The Best & Worst Ways to End the Day

What you do in those last 15 minutes matters before we close our eyes, says a lot.

  • The Winners: Those who have pillow talk before sleep report the highest sleep quality. It turns out a good old-fashioned chat is the best sedative.
  • The Bookworms: Reading a book makes you 24.1% less likely to wake up feeling irritable.
  • The Scrollers: Late-night scrolling is tempting, but it’s a trap. 30.6% of scrollers wake up with massive food cravings, which increases the risk of "brain bog" by 24.5% compared to those who meditate.

What is Sleep Really Worth?

We asked the nation: “If you could guarantee amazing sleep every night, what would you be willing to pay per month?” The results show that we are no longer looking for the cheapest option; we are looking for a solution that works.

The Monthly Investment Breakdown

Across the UK, the willingness to invest in sleep breaks down as follows:

  • 12.9% of the nation are "High Investors," willing to pay £101+ per month.
  • 15.1% are willing to pay £51–£100 per month.
  • 21.7% sit in the £11–£25 bracket.
  • 15.2% would pay £1–£10.
  • Only 17.6% said they would not be willing to pay anything (£0).

The National Average Spend

When we look at the weighted average across the entire UK population, the price we put on a perfect night's sleep is:

  • Monthly Investment: £34.75
  • Cost Per Night: £1.14

Buying Once and Buying Well

As a B Corp, we were delighted to see that the "Conscious Sleeper" is now a mainstream thing.

  • 33.5% of you now prioritise sustainability, and 33% care deeply about durability. You want things that last, not things that end up in a landfill after six months.
  • The Gen X Leaders: It’s not just the kids! Gen X (45–54) are actually our most eco-conscious age group at 36.7%.
  • The Quality Link: If you care about the planet, you’re 25.5% more likely to be a "High Spender" for a good night's rest. You understand that buying once and buying well is better for your wallet and the world.
