What is Eco-Friendly Home Decor?
We tend to avoid the word “eco-friendly.” While it sounds positive, it’s often too vague to be genuinely useful. According to the UK’s Green Claims Code, any environmental claim must be clear, specific, and supported by solid evidence and “eco-friendly” often falls short.
It’s always worth being cautious of brands using broad or unqualified terms like “green”, “kind to the planet”, or “eco-friendly” without explaining what they actually mean. For us, transparency matters. That’s why we use more specific terms like “responsibly sourced”, and we back up all claims with certifications and trusted standards, so you can feel confident about where things come from and how they’re made.
When exploring home decor options think about the full picture. What claims are being made and are they verified claims? To be credible, responsibly sourced should involve:
Ethical labour practices – Fair wages, safe working conditions, no forced or child labour
Environmental care – Protecting ecosystems, reducing pollution, avoiding overexploitation
Transparency – Clear traceability of where and how the materials were obtained
Certifications or standards – Such as FSC (Forestry), GOTS (Textiles), Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, etc.
Brilliantly Bright – Energy Efficient Light
Let’s be honest – life’s just easier when you can see where you’re going. But lighting doesn’t have to be dull or damaging to the planet. Choose energy-efficient LED bulbs (extra points if they’re made from recycled glass or plastic).
And of course, every bulb needs a base. When buying new lampshades or wooden lamp stands, take a moment to check that the wood has been responsibly sourced. Look for certifications like FSC or PEFC; they help ensure the materials aren’t contributing to deforestation or impacting ancient forests.
Lovely Little Extras – Recycled and Raw Materials
Your bits and bobs matter, especially when they’re made with the planet in mind. Pottery and ceramics? Yes please. Clay is natural and everywhere, but don’t forget – firing it takes a lot of energy. Look out for pieces from makers who use renewable energy or efficient kilns.
We’re big fans of all things preloved – there’s something special about uncovering hidden gems in charity shops or at car boot sales. We especially love giving a second life to items made from the metal family. Think funky signs, vases, or candle holders made from bits and bobs that have lived a past life and reduce the need (and energy) to mine or extract raw metals. Modern day treasure hunting.
Dreamy Bedding with a Green Heart

Our favourite place (you guessed it) is the bed. And you can make bedding choices which are beautiful and better for the environment, with materials from responsible sources. Linen comes from flax, a plant that needs little water and promotes healthier soil and biodiversity. Flax is an extremely versatile plant, traditionally every part of the plant is used, so nothing goes to waste. Its' fibres are breathable, keeping you comfy in hot weather, and they last a long time too. Hemp is another top choice, especially when it’s processed gently and grown responsibly.
Did you know hemp is super at taking carbon dioxide from the air? One hectare of industrial hemp can absorb 15 tonnes of CO 2 per hectare, according to Envirocrops .
Organic cotton is a classic choice and for good reason. Just make sure it’s certified by trusted standards like OCS (Organic Content Standard) or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). Certified organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals, uses less water, supports healthier soil, and encourages more responsible farming practices overall. Good news; we are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard, which certifies and tracks organically grown cotton from the source to final product.

Potted Plants and Dried Delights
Nothing says home quite like a leafy friend on the windowsill. Plants make us feel good and look lovely, too, and come with the added bonus of helping to remove carbon dioxide from the air in our homes. NASA research scientists looked into which houseplants are best for improving indoor air quality , so if you’ve got a Spider Plant, Snake Plant, or Peace Lily, good news - they’re effective at removing pollutants like formaldehyde and xylene.
If you’re less green fingered, dried flowers are a brilliant low-maintenance, long-lasting option. There’s no watering needed, and they keep their beauty for months - if not years. What’s not to love?
Paint with Purpose

Fancy a change of colour? Go for it. Try a natural paint made with clay and look out for paints that are low in VOCs (those are the sneaky chemicals that can linger in the air). We’ve got a soft spot for Earthborn Paints – their colours are dreamy and they’re much gentler on the environment.
Reusables that Work Hard and Look Great
Small swaps can make a big difference. Ditch the disposable napkins and say hello to reusable fabric ones in lovely cotton or linen. They add a bit of everyday luxury to mealtimes and won’t end up in the bin - and then landfill - after a single use.
Candles with a Conscience
We do love a good candlelit evening. When shopping for candles, go for ones made from soy, beeswax, or coconut wax – ideally from companies who tell you exactly where their ingredients come from. A little transparency goes a long way.
Cleaning, The Kind Way

Your beautiful home deserves a gentle touch. Instead of harsh chemicals, try lemon juice and baking soda – two brilliant natural cleaners you might already have in your kitchen.
When it’s time to wash your linens, a 30–40 degree wash is usually enough. We rely on our BCorp friends at Wilton London who make the best smelling botanical fabric care around. Their cleaning products are formulated with plant-based, biodegradable ingredients, reducing environmental impact. These products are also vegan and cruelty-free, certified by The Vegan Society, ensuring no animal-derived ingredients or testing.
Picking the Right Brands
When you’re shopping for home goodies, choose companies that do things the right way:
No excessive packaging
Responsibly sourced materials
Fair treatment for workers
We’re especially fond of B Corps (like us) because they meet high standards for social and environmental impact. But don’t worry if a brand doesn’t have the badge – lots of great companies are doing brilliant things behind the scenes.
You can always have a peek at their impact report ( we’ve got one too ) to see what they’re really about.
Happy decorating, friends. Here’s to homes that feel good and do good.
