I’ve always seen the world as a wonderfully colourful place. Not just in the obvious sense, blue skies, green leaves, all the lovely natural bits, but in how colour makes you feel.

It’s never just visual to me. It’s emotional. It’s atmosphere. It’s energy. I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that.

There’s actually plenty of research around colour psychology that shows certain colours can influence our mood, our energy, even how calm or uplifted we feel day to day. But truthfully, you don’t need a study to tell you that. You can feel it the moment you walk into a space that just feels right.

For me, it’s always been quite simple. There must be colour in your home, just so long as it’s used with a little bit of thought and a little bit of planning.

Why colour changes everything

Colour has a way of shaping an interior space without us even realising it. A soft blue room can make you breathe a little slower. A warm dusty pink can feel comforting, almost like a hug. Greens tend to steady and ground us, no surprise when they remind us so much of the natural world.

And then there’s yellow

I have such a soft spot for yellow. To me, it’s pure joy. It’s sunshine on a grey morning, that first daffodil of spring, that little spark that instantly lifts a room and, if I’m honest, my mood too. Even just a touch, a cushion, a throw, a lampshade or a mug, can make a room feel a bit brighter, a bit lighter, a bit happier. It never fails me and I love yellow.

It’s the combinations that really bring a room to life

While I adore individual colours, I think the real magic happens when you start bringing them together.

A thoughtfully put-together colour combination can completely change how a space feels. It can make a room feel calm and grounded, or energised and full of personality. Colour makes things feel considered, like someone has really thought about how that space should feel to live in.

We all know that feeling when you walk into a room and everything sits beautifully together. Nothing jars, nothing feels out of place, and you instantly feel at ease. That’s the power of colour combinations working exactly as they should.

Taking a little inspiration from nature

Some of the most mood-boosting palettes are the ones we already know, the ones we see outside every day.

Soft greens with warm neutrals, sandy colours mixed with light blues, earthy colours next to creamy whites… they all have this wonderfully calming effect. I think it’s because they feel familiar to each and every one of us.

If you’re ever unsure where to begin with colour, nature is the perfect place to start. It never gets it wrong and it’s right on your doorstep every single day.

And then there are the big and bold ones…

Now, I do love a bold colour. The brighter, the better (I do like fluorescent colours like highlighter pens and fluorescent ink for drawing and doodling).

Hot pinks, punchy oranges, and vivid blues bring so much joy and energy into a space. They have this wonderful ability to wake a room up, to make it feel playful and alive. But I’ve learnt that they work best when you let them shine in very small doses.

A little pop here, a flash there, just enough to catch your eye and lift your mood without overwhelming everything else.

It’s all about balance. Letting the bright bits dance, rather than take over completely. Honestly, the pop of colour can be a mug, a picture frame, a cushion. So long as it is in your colour scheme, it really will make a difference.

Creating a home that actually feels good

I think that’s really what this all comes down to. Colour isn’t about rules or trends or getting things “right”, it’s about creating a home that feels good to be in.

It might be a soft, calming palette that helps you switch off at the end of the day. It might be layers of joyful colour that make you smile every time you walk into the room. Or, more likely, a bit of both, because we’re human, after all, and we need different things at different times.

The loveliest spaces always have a bit of personality to them. They don’t feel overly perfect or too polished. They feel lived-in, thoughtful, and full of little moments of joy.

A colourful life really is a happier one

I truly believe that colour has the power to shift our mood in the smallest, simplest ways, and those little shifts add up.

A brighter morning. A calmer evening. a favourite outfit, A room that makes you feel just that bit more like yourself.

So, if you’re ever hesitating, whether to add that yellow cushion, buy that bright red mug, or bring a bit more colour into your home, I’d say go for it.

Most importantly, have fun with it. Colour means soooooooo much joy.
