Caring for your bed linen
How to wash your bed linen and shrinkage
We do recommend that you wash your bedding before you use it. Firstly, to remove any industrial smells, and secondly to allow the natural fibres to shrink slightly. We make all our bedding a teeny bit bigger than it should be because cotton will shrink a little on its first wash. This might be most noticeable on our fitted sheets, so if you feel that the item looks a little on the large side, try it again after the first wash at 40 degrees and we’re sure it will be a perfect fit.
Be careful not to wash with other non-textile items. No trainers or zipped items please. Wash your bedding on its own, and avoid overloading. This can damage the machine and you will find abrasion from a very full machine may break the fibres in your sheets.Mixing polyester sheets, or sheets that already have some pilling, will increase the chance of your bedding becoming damaged.
Use a light detergent, and wash at the temperature recommended on the care label. Do not dry clean your bed linen, this is a chemical process it may damage the fibres. We recommend washing your sheets once a week… because you can’t beat fresh sheets, and unwanted bacteria will be sleeping with you too. Some of our cushions and throws are dry clean only, please check the label before you plan to wash them.
You may tumble dry your bed linen at a lower gentle temperature, although we would recommend that you don’t. Tumble drying over time will break down the fabric and shorten the life of your bed linen.
Ideally you would dry it flat over a radiator, or on the washing line. We know it’s not an ideal world so If you do tumble dry, take it out of the machine while it is still a little damp, then dry it flat. This will help with ironing.
Some of our cushions and throws are not recommended for the tumble dryer, please check the label.
Ironing is not compulsory, but we admit to being a little bit obsessive with ironing, and a freshly ironed bed is a wonderful place to be.
Effort is required for percale and crisp finished bedding, slightly less for relaxed and sateen bedding, but it will be worth it. Pillowcases, duvet covers and flat sheets are easy, as they can be folded for ironing. Fitted sheets we iron on the bed, you might need an extension lead, but it’s much easier like this (be careful, if you have a polyester topper or mattress, it might stick, test a little area first).
You can use a medium to hot Iron on all of our cotton bedding. A hot iron will also kill any bacteria that has survived the wash.
Please do not use bleach, or detergents containing bleach, on any of our products. Colour will fade quickly.
Pilling will happen over time and all fabrics pill to some extent. Some nightwear, pets, body hair, and toenails are not our friends when it comes to pilling. Be aware of anything that will catch or be abrasive against your sheets.
We know some of the above are not avoidable so here are a few tips to help. Rotate your sheets regularly. Wash once a week and then turn your sheets so that you sleep on a different section.
Our sheets are reversible so you have four options when making up your bed. Use the label to help you remember its orientation each time. Dust is our enemy in many ways but particularly with pilling, as dust particles get closer together and get bigger, they create pilling.
Store your bedding in a dust free environment. Storing your bedding sets together inside a pillowcase will keep them dust free, and help you to find them in the airing cupboard.
It’s not always possible, but try not to expose your bed linen to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Short bursts (line drying) are fine, but if your bed has direct sunlight from a window for part of the day, we suggest covering it with a throw or rotating it often.
Wash all elements of your sets at the same time, then any discolouration will then be even. Some skin and hair products using oxidising agents will also cause some discolouration, please be really aware of this as you will find bleached patches on your bedding.
None of the above is hard work we promise, ironing is fun with music or wine, love your bedding and it will love you back.
Sleep well, and please do share any tips that you have with us.
Please get in touch if there is anything that we can help you with.
