May's Secret Sevens

May has been madness. We've been running around and juggling lots of different jobs. Jodie, who usually wraps all our parcels, has been getting married and sunning herself on her honeymoon in St Lucia. So, we've spent two weeks being Jodie at Secret Linen Store and we just can't wait for her to come back to us.

In between wrapping parcels, we've managed to squeeze some other bits into May... here's what we've been doing.

This show has the seal of approval from us all here at Secret Linen Store. It's rare to come across a show so good, that you can really sink your teeth into. Big Little Lies is full of brilliant actresses, gripping character stories and a soundtrack so good, we've had it on repeat through the whole of May.

The cast is full of impressive Hollywood types and with only 7 episodes, it's just enough to leave you wanting more. Spend a Sunday catching up with this series on Sky, or read the book first before you settle down to watch.

This month we launched our latest collection of beautiful bed linen. Our summer collection has arrived, boxes brimming with brilliant new bits.

As with every season we like to introduce a new design... something Molly has designed that is totally unique to us. For Summer this was Dandelions and so far it's been flying out the door. We also launched our beautiful Butterflies in a summer shade of duck egg and extended our range of Essential Dove Grey sheets into duvet covers. Take a peek and let us know what you think of our summer soft stuff.

Molly's favourite place is her hometown... London. She's been spending some time exploring and discovering wonderful things in the capital.

Devol Kitchen Show Home at Clerkenwell Design Week

"Clerkenwell Design Week is always a highlight in my year... especially as I get to wander around Fabric nightclub in the daytime (a place I often danced the night away in many years ago!).

Devol kitchen had a super townhouse right in the heart of Clekenwell that has been restored and decorated in the more timeless way. Helen Parker from Devol Kitchens said;

"I wanted to make the house feel alive and full of character yet I wanted it to feel moody and enticing, I wanted it to be a little bit dark but welcoming in its softness."

The Japanese House: Architecture and Life after 1945 at The Barbican

"What a TREAT. If you're interested in how we live, the objects we surround ourselves with or the spaces we spend our entire lives in, this is for you. The 3rd floor at The Barbican Art Gallery is always home to a beautifully curated exhibition, this one is no exception. Japanese architecture is simple, and the recreation of the Moriyama House will leave you wandering around, losing track of time. The exhibition is open until the 25th of June."

Molly's been busy making even more cakes. This month a delicious Flourless Orange Cake.

"A cake, made with oranges and no flour? Amazing. You'll need to boil the oranges for an hour, something that I have never done before, but delicious and quite like nothing I've ever tasted before.

The recipe is from Polpo, one of my favourite books full of Venetian style food. My copy is covered in tomato sauce from a meatball explosion.... it's very well used.

Give this recipe a go, the tangy orange sponge and zesty sauce we're a treat for the taste buds at the end of a meal. Perfect if you can't or don't eat wheat as flour is substituted with ground almonds."

  • 2 oranges
  • 100g brown sugar
  • 400g caster sugar
  • 6 medium free-range eggs
  • 250g ground almonds
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • Zest and juice of 1 orange
  • 250g mascarpone
  • 2 tablespoons double cream

  1. Place your oranges into a pan with plenty of water and boil for two hours. Remove, but save the cooking liquid for later.
  2. Place the brown sugar with half the caster sugar into a food processor, add the eggs and whizz until light and fluffy.
  3. Preheat your oven, 180°C/Gas 4. When the oranges have cooled, cut them into medium-sized pieces, remove seeds and add to the processor. Continue to whizz until smooth.
  4. Add the ground almonds and baking powder, whizz to combine.
  5. Grease a 26cm cake tin with oil and line with baking paper. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake in the oven for 1–1½ hours.
  6. Test if the cake is ready, using a metal skewer. If it comes out clean, it's cooked.
  7. To make the syrup, pour the cooking liquid from the oranges into a pan. If there's not 750ml then top up with water. Add the remaining caster sugar, thin strips of orange zest and then the juice of one orange. Bring to boil for 10 minutes or until thick and syrupy.
  8. Mix the mascarpone with the double cream in a separate dish
  9. Serve your cake with your orange syrup and a dollop of your mascarpone cream. YUM.

There's nothing better than discovering a new brand, especially when they love bedtime just as much as we do.

Desmond & Dempsey is our new pyjama obsession. Started by Joel and Molly, they set out to create a bed shirt for her, that would be as comfortable as his. Their bedtime bits are cosy and comfortable, but with bundles of style. Perfect if you're looking for something new to sleep in, or even just something for Sunday morning slouching.
