January's Secret Sevens

Wow. January is already over, can you believe it?

Hopefully you've had a great start to the year. We've had a very busy January... a huge Winter Sale, a three day photo shoot for new collections and working on new wonderful products that will make your beds even better. Here are seven of our favourite things from this month.

Wearing

Molly got some classic Mahabis for Christmas... she swears they're like a hug for your feet. The comfiest and warmest things you'll find, we can't stop her talking about them, so that must mean she loves them.

Coveting

As is always the case with January (the month after we've spent all our money) we have lots on our wish lists.

Lucy, our fabulous friend, has recently started a new business, Cafe of Curiosities. It's still early days, but we know there's lots more exciting things to come. The first collection of mugs are a little bit of fun and a great pick me up with your morning coffee.

We've also been making new friends this month on Instagram. Seven Seventeen popped up and made our day saying how much they loved their new sheets. Their mood-boosting candles are a bit of fun and smell divine, we won't be happy until we have one of each for every room.

A couple of our new favourite Instagram accounts we've discovered this month...

Online Stylist - A bit of fashion, a bit of home and a smattering of her pooch Biscuit.

Blondie & Rye - We have never seen such beautiful bread.

Baking

Yet again Jodie has been getting busy in the kitchen and this month she's whipped up a Sticky Toffee Pudding. YUM. She opted for our good friend Jamie Oliver's recipe. Jodie's top tip... add a sprinkle of salt around the edge of the cake before serving to make it even more special.

What you'll need

  • 225g fresh dates, stoned
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 85g unsalted butter, softened
  • 170g caster sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 170g self-raising flour
  • ¼ teaspoon ground mixed spice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons Ovaltine
  • 2 tablespoons natural yoghurt

For the sauce...

  • 115g unsalted butter
  • 115g light muscovado sugar
  • 140ml double cream

How to bake

  1. Preheat your oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Put the dates in a bowl with the bicarbonate of soda and cover with 200ml of boiling water. Leave to stand for a couple of minutes to soften, then drain. Whiz the dates in a food processor until you have a purée. Meanwhile, cream your butter and sugar until pale using a wooden spoon, and add the eggs, flour, mixed spice, cinnamon and Ovaltine. Mix together well, then fold in the yoghurt and your puréed dates. Pour into a buttered, ovenproof dish and bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes.
  2. While the pudding is cooking, make the toffee sauce by putting the butter, sugar and cream in a pan over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce has thickened and darkened in colour. To serve, spoon out the pudding at the table and pour over the toffee sauce.

Reading

If your resolution is to read more this year, but you're yet to get past page one, we have a tip... Don't restrict yourself to 300 page novels, instead fill your home with coffee table books that you can delve in and out of when the mood strikes. Sally's favourite... Humans of New York: Stories. You've probably heard all about HONY, but if you haven't, you must (go take a look).

The book is a collection of some of Brandon's best 'stories' and is the perfect thing to accompany your morning cuppa.

 Listening

Only a year or so late to the party... all we can listen too is 'My Dad Wrote a Porno'. Not for those that blush easily, but it will definitely make you cackle with laughter.

Watching

We have to mention this... La La Land. No spoilers here though. It left us whirling and twirling around the warehouse, dreaming of jazzy nights with Ryan Gosling. It really was a truly wonderful film, with the best opening scene that we have seen in a film even (no exaggerations here). Fully deserving of all the praise it's been getting, it doesn't disappoint.
