Molly Meets Tom Raffield

I've been a huge fan of Tom Raffield since I first discovered him on Grand Designs. He was creating a beautiful house filled with his wonderful designs in my favourite place, Cornwall.

If you've somehow not heard about Tom Raffield, he designs beautiful steam bent wooden lighting and furniture.

We've been friends for a while now... they've helped us out with some beautiful bits for our photoshoots and we've helped make their bed (see their bedroom below... it's breathtaking!).

As we've been friends for a little while now, I met Tom so that you could get to know him too...

Describe what you do in 3 words

Design and make with steam bending

What makes you get out of bed in the morning?

A love and passion for what I do and an obsession for creating things which have never been made before

What does a typical Monday morning look like for you?

Busy! I will try and get all of my meetings and ‘to do list’ out of the way so I can get on with design work; this bit I love the most!

We saw your incredible home on Grand Designs… if you could save just one thing from it, what would it be?

The steam bent wooden lighting; When we put it all up, it transformed the space and made it feel like our home.

What was the first ever Tom Raffield product? Tell us about it…

A chaise longue; a steam bent complex form which looked more like a piece of art than a sculpture… but it was surprisingly comfortable!

Are your children interested in what you do? Would you encourage them to follow in your footsteps?

They think it is normal for every Dad to have a steam bending workshop behind their house with lots of craftspeople making things.

They love making too but I will always encourage them to find their own path and do what makes them feel happy…. That’s what I did.

Where do you get your inspiration for new products from?

Constantly trying new things out, developing, and exploring what can be achieved with wood and steam bending.

So many of the shapes and forms originate from nature; I spend as much time as possible in the woods or exploring the Cornish seascape; so many of the shapes and forms found within nature are the starting point for a design.

Are you all about long lie-ins or up with the lark?

I get up at 5am as I find the mornings are so beautiful where I live and work but also it allows me to get in the workshop and ‘play’ before anybody else gets in!

If you had to have the same thing for breakfast every morning what would it be?

Coffee, maybe a little later in the day some poached eggs on toast!

Who would you invite to your dream midnight feast?

Charles and Ray Eames; I love learning of their life, attitude to design and the innovation in their products.

How do you relax after a long day?

Enjoy time with the family, relax with a glass of red and good food. Or to the pub to catch up with friends!

Clean sheet Friday or clean sheet Sunday? Harriet & I disagree...

Clean sheet Sunday

Tea or Coffee? How do you take yours…

Coffee and milk, no sugar! The stronger the better.

Tell us a secret?

We have been working hard on some exciting new ranges that will launch in Spring / Summer this year!

Who should Molly meet next?

Sebastian Cox, a London based designer!

Your Dream Bedtime…

On my bed…

Relaxed Denim Natural Linen Bedding Set, with the knitted oatmeal throw. The natural colours would work fantastically with the interior of our home!

I look out my window and see…

A Cornish woodland, a steam bent house and the morning mist.

I’ll be dreaming of…

Some better weather! Cornish winters are long and wet, so summer can’t come soon enough!
