Molly Meets Colour Expert Karen

Molly meets colour expert Karen Haller

It's no secret that we love colour... so we thought it was about time Molly met someone just as fanatic about colour as we are. We sent Karen an email one raining January day asking her to be our friend, and she couldn't wait to talk about colour with us.

Karen Haller is a colour wizard. She's spent the last 20 years learning all about what colours suit each room in your home and why some colours make us happy and some make us sad. She's written a book, speaks across the county and seems to be the go-to for anyones colour queries. We asked her to chat with Molly all about her bedtimes, mornings and share some of her colour tips and secrets.

Over to Karen...

Tell me what you do in 3 words.

Takes colourful adventures

What’s the best thing about what you do?

I get to play with colour every day - what’s not to love about that!

I get to explore, discover and share the fascinating world of colour with my clients and professional designers, who I teach, and help them use applied colour psychology to enhance their living and working spaces or their businesses.

What makes you get out of bed in the morning?

What gets me up every morning is knowing there’s a global colour revolution happening. We are no longer scared about using colour or scared about getting it wrong. We’re reconnecting back to what is so instinctive - our authentic self and to nature.

What's the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Believe in what you do. Because on your darkest days, when nothing seems to be going right, you can pull on that inner strength. And I would also add to that to be kind to yourself, to others and to the planet. Imagine how glorious the world would be if everyone behaved that way!

What are your three top tips for bringing colour into the home?

  1. Pick the colours that YOU love, that resonate with your personality, that express your authentic soul.
  2. Don’t worry about what other people think about your colour choices. Your home is for you to fall in love with, it's not there to get other people’s approval... and by taking that approach your home will love you back!
  3. Remember back to being a child and how much you loved and embraced colour. Tap into that spontaneity – colour is nothing to be afraid of.

Love or loathe ‘Greenery’ Pantone’s colour of the year?

I know some people loathe it but I love it because of what it psychologically represents... which is all about new beginnings, a new start, a new lease of life. We are just on the verge of bursting into spring and that’s what this colour represents for me. It’s almost that childhood feeling of when the sap is rising and you’re just waiting for the colours of spring to burst through.

What would be your top colour choice for a bedroom?

I always recommend to start with what behaviours you want to express in the bedroom... I know where your mind is probably going ;)

No, seriously if you want to for instance mentally switch off and soothe your mind, then the lighter end of the blue spectrum is a good place to start.

Then when you’ve picked out the colours that resonate with you, you can start building up a tonally harmonious scheme with the right proportion and placement to create the feel and the response that you’re after.

What's the biggest colour mistake you can make in the bedroom?

That would have to be yellow. It’s the one colour I suggest to my clients to avoid using in the bedroom, even though it’s a colour that expresses happiness, and is linked to self-confidence and is uplifting. The reason it’s linked to all of these traits is because it’s linked to the nervous system which if used in a bedroom can result in waking up tired and irritated and of course, no one wants that.

You may be interested to know it’s avoided by hotels because the last thing they want is to have irritated guests.

Are you an early bird or night owl?

Oh, I’m definitely an early bird. I love getting things done whilst the world outside is quiet. And I do love the colours of a good sunrise.

Instagram or Twitter?

While I do love Instagram because it’s such a visual feast, because you can only upload from your mobile phone I just find it all a bit of a faff. If I could do it from my laptop I’d be all over it like a shot. So only because of that I find twitter easier.

What's on your bed today?

Because it’s a chilly February Sunday, I got my cosy rug, books, note pad to scribble ideas and sketches, a warming cuppa, my laptop and me.

Who would you invite to your dream midnight feast?

Given that I would be able to stay awake until then and not miss my own party, and as I love witty banter it would have to be Sandi Toksvig, Sue Perkins, Claudia Winkelman, David Mitchell, Ross Noble and Noel Fielding. I’m sure it would all descend into some form of comedy chaos which would not only keep me awake but have me in stitches from laughing.

I guess a unicorn prancing by wouldn’t look out of place either.

How do you like your eggs in the morning?

I absolutely love poached eggs but I’m hopeless at making them. Now if I was on match.com I’d definitely be looking for a man with that skill.

You’re off for a weekend camping… What one luxury would you take from your bedroom?

I’ve slept so many times on the ground on my trekking and hiking adventures so I can definitely say the one thing I do miss is a soft, comfy pillow.

Tell us a secret?

My go to film when I want a good laugh is Monty Python’s Holy Grail.

Who should Molly meet next?

My friend and florist Sacha Marie Mulligan @cherryblossomuk. She’s the most energetic and positively optimistic person I know with a heart of gold. Every time we’re together it’s non-stop giggles and mischief.
