Our Summer Reading List

summer-books

Whether you're heading off for a week at the beach, or looking for a new book to read in bed, we've chosen our six favourite books that we recommend you spend your summer with...

Sapiens

Harriet and Molly's Dad is a book worm (and a pretty great help with our IT too!). Harriet always heads to him for a book recommendation. He suggested "Sapiens" by Yuval Noah Harari, and now she can't put it down.

It's a history of humankind, and our evolution from Neanderthals, and other homo species that have gone before us. It details where we came from and how the various revolutions of mankind have shaped us into what we are today. Definitely one to get you thinking!

Perhaps not one for right before bed, or you'll find yourself up all night.

The Kicking the Bucket List

It's a tear jerker, but filled with lots of "Mum knows best" humour. After their mother passes away, three sisters find out that to receive their inheritance, they must spend time together over the course of a year, to carry out their mothers "Bucket List". The sisters haven't spoken in years and the book tells the story of them trying to build a relationship again, after years of petty arguments.

The perfect easy read for sitting out in the garden on a sunny evening.

Mid-Life, Ex-Wife

A memoir from Guardian columnist Stella Grey about her escapades into the world of online dating as a divorced woman. The book follows 693 days of terrible dates, depressing dates and bizarre encounters. She's brutally honest and we may have snorted our tea through our noses just a couple of times. It's easy to delve in and out of, and perfect for a sunny Sunday morning in bed with a cuppa.

Persiana

Some of us just aren't made for sitting down with a novel... Molly says she find it tricky, with so many other things on her mind, she struggles to stay focused on the page. Her bookshelf is filled with cook books, magazines and even more cook books. Her favourite book to reach for in the summer in "Persiana" by Sabrina Ghayour.

Everything is so easy, and is quite delicious. All you need are a few store cupboard basics to start, but as soon as you're stocked up you won't be disappointed.

Her two favourite recipes that you must try.... Harissa Poisson and the Leg of lamb. The Eastern Mess was also a massive success at a recent dinner party, so lovely and very easy.

A Long Way Home

After watching the film adaptation 'Lion' (several times!) last year, we finally got around to picking up a copy of the book by Saroo Brierley. We love when you watch a film that's brilliant, and find out there's a book to delve into afterwards. You get to find out more about characters you already love and the books are almost always better than the film adaptations. We know we're in for a real treat.

If you've not seen the film, you need to! Pick up a copy of the book to start the second the credits start rolling, but make sure to have a box of tissues at the ready!

Ice Cream for Breakfast

This isn't a recipe book full of ideas for Sunday breakfast Sundaes (unfortunately). This is a life guide on how to make your life a little more fun, and couldn't we all do with a that?

Full of Laura's personal anecdotes it tells her story, whilst giving easily digestible tips for how to make your life full of joy. After reaching the top of her career, publishing her first book which was a raging success, she realised she was terribly unhappy. To get back to her old self, she quit her job and decided to become a nanny. Spending all her time with children showed her how as adults we can be child-like in life, without ever being child-ish.

She doesn't hold back with her language, so if you're easily offended, this might not be the one for you. But if you're looking for a new way to bring a bit of fun to adult life, then this book will do just that!

If you've got any good recomendations, we'd love to know
