Every one of us uses a towel every single day. Just like our bed linen, they are an important part of our daily lives, that we probably give little attention to. It’s been my job here to find you towels that dry you, dry themselves and feel great on your skin every single day.

There is only one thing that comes close to that feeling of slipping into clean sheets at the end of a long day, and that’s a long relaxing bath with good tunes and a candle (or 7), so we decided that a range of Secret Linen Store towels would be a great addition.

We asked you what you wanted, and many of you said that a towel to match your bed linen would be just the ticket. So here we are, a range of colours that are the exact match for some of our best bed linens, and a striped range that are a little bit special... read on to find out why.

Setting out on our hunt for towels was easy and difficult all at the same time. Here’s why… I (Molly) have been making towels for other high street stores for many years, before Secret Linen Store was even an idea. This meant I knew exactly where to go for the best service, the most absorbent towels and little bit of innovation. We wanted to bring you something new and different… but surely a towel is just a towel? Well, it turns out there's more to towels than meets the eye. There are all sorts of combinations of colours, twists, trims, patterns and weights.

When I wandered into the factory for the first time I had a tick list of what we wanted our Secret Linen Store towels to be. We knew we wanted a collection that was super absorbent, soft and cosy but without too much weight. Heavy towels can be a luxury, but practically they’re bulky, take a long time to dry and use up a lot of energy to wash. As a busy Mum, living in small space, I wanted to find something that was comfy, absorbent, great for washing, storing and drying, whilst still looking great in our bathrooms.

The weight of a towel is measured in GSM (grams per square meter). Towels can be made in any weight from 150 gsm (very thin) up to 900gsm (extremely heavy). Heavy weight does not necessarily mean more absorbent. We need to take into account the quality and suitability of the cotton, along with the weaving. The quality of the cotton that’s used in a towel is vital for its longevity and absorbency. We use a long staple cotton yarn, just as good quality as Egyptian cotton but without the price tag. Cotton is a natural fibre, and long staples are important for making soft and beautiful towels. The cotton that we use comes tried and tested. Made with love and care at our great factory in Portugal, who themselves have been making towels for over 50 years.

Plain Luxury Towels

500 gsm cotton towels with a super soft rice weave.

Heavy weight towels range from 700gsm to 900 gsm. We find these all a bit too heavy so we have gone for a beautifully soft cotton, rice weave towel in the perfect everyday weight of 500gsm.

This towel feels exactly as you would expect a luxury towel to feel. Super soft spun cotton, woven, softened and finished simply. Tried and tested in our busy homes, quick to dry and not too bulky to store… and you can fit more than one in your washing machine, hurrah!

The rice weaving has a slightly different appearance to the terry towelling style of towels we’ve been used to. A rice weave makes our towels feel super soft and they’re far less likely to catch or pull. We have four lovely colours to compliment our bed linen: White, Dove Grey, Charcoal and Duck Egg. Striped Cotton Towels

Ultra thin, yet super absorbant towels. Quick drying, and economical to wash.

Lighter towels mean fitting more in the washing machine, less drying time and much less space needed to store them in the airing cupboard. These are perfect for busy households, where the towels are in a never ending damp state. Perfect for when you need to pop a towel in your bag, or if you’re living in a small space. They also double up as a great yoga mat...what's not to like?

The reason we love them so much is that, along with feeling great, these towels are much better for our precious planet. Washing and machine drying towels uses a lot of energy. Thick towels will fill a standard washing machine very quickly, some might only fit just one bath sheet at a time. Washing and drying a machine full of towels every 2 days uses around 440kg of CO2e… this is the same amount of energy as a return flight from London to Glasgow, with a taxi ride at each end.

We know our towels need washing (and fairly often too) so these let us improve machine efficiency, which saves us time, and helps reduce your carbon footprint. One side of these is towelling, as you’re used to, but feels much thinner. A thinner towel doesn’t mean worse quality, especially when the quality of the cotton and the weaving is of such a high standard. We know that once you feel the benefits of our lightweight towels, you won’t go back.

Adding a touch of our Secret Linen Store style with our Coastal Stripe design, our fabulous tasselled fringe is the perfect finishing touch. View the full collection here.
